Stressed? Mind your a B c ‘s

Anyone that knows me knows I’m particularly good at stressing! Not exactly the best talent… Having August off from school and travelling through the UK did wonders. BUT with school ramping up again and my sister’s wedding coming up I feel the stress creeping back in. LIFE IS STRESSFUL. And not just for me! I know A LOT of people that are chronically stressed. It seems to be a favoured topic in all the popular mags and health shows – indicating it is a big societal problem.

There is loads of advice out there on changing lifestyle and attitude to manage stress – which is great! But, if you’re like me, you’ll get stressed trying to follow all the advice! While you’re trying to tackle all your stress inducing habits enlist the help of  B vitamins. B VITAMINS ARE YOUR FRIEND!

The whole complex of B vitamins are incredibly important for coping with stress and maintaining overall health.

They play a critical role in:   ENERGY (ATP) production

  • normal nervous system functioning
  • carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism

and (the biggy)…

ADRENAL HEALTH (adrenal glands produce and release hormones that respond to physical and emotional stress; adrenal dysfunction is associated with fatigue, depression, immune suppression, hypoglycemia, improper digestion, and reduced ability to cope with stress)

Are you impressed yet? The Bs are superheroes as far as I’m concerned. Unfortunately, like so many great things, they don’t stick around for long. Bs are water soluble vitamins which means they are not easily stored in the body and are required daily through diet and/or supplementation.

So where can you find B vitamins? Try avocados, dark leafy greens, broccoli, salmon, sunflower and sesame seeds, brown rice, lentils, buckwheat, eggs, and mushrooms to name just a few.

The good news is B vitamins are everywhere (well, in all the healthy stuff anyways…) If you are going through a particularly stressful time extra supplementation can be beneficial.  I like AOR’s Advance B Complex. Remember, vitamins are supposed to be found in our food so take capsules at meal time. Yes, lifestyle and attitude can greatly affect your stress levels. But your body has a big say too. If your body is not being properly supported your response to stressors is going to be enhanced. The more stressed you are, the more stressed your body, the more stressed you are…not a good cycle to get trapped in! Do your body a favour and GET YOUR B VITAMINS!

    Nice post, Kate! I’m also a fan of AOR’s B complex… and I should probably stock up again given the “particularly stressful time” we’re about to endure!
